DOM Load and Save API provides a means for serializing XML data. The following example shows how to serialize an XML DOM document and produce ‘pretty’ indented output.

// First load your xml into a DOM

To insert a new root node into an existing DOM Document involves creating a new DOM Document with the required new root node, and then copying in the existing DOM Document into the new root.

The following code snippets shows an outline of the code involved.

A Transformer can be used to write the XML for a DOM Document to a String. As the name implies a Transformer transforms a Source object into a Result, in this case the Source is the DOM Document, and the Result is a StringWriter (which the resulting XML String can be extracted from).

TransformerFactory factory = TransformerFactory.newInstance();
Transformer transformer = factory.newTransformer();
StringWriter writer = new StringWriter();
Result result = new StreamResult(writer);
Source source = new DOMSource(document);
transformer.transform(source, result);
String xml = writer.toString();
